Kaley Cuoco hosted for the second year in a row, and started off the show by emulating the butt-kicking awesomeness of this year’s action leading ladies because, honestly, who was cooler than Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Lawrence? Surprisingly, this didn’t include an ode to archery, which keeps being talked about as being the year’s most talked about activity in movies. Moving on to my favorite moments from the People’s Choice Awards:
Taylor Swift wins for best line of night and just cool points in general for not giving the death stare to presenter Olivia Munn when she jokingly kept trying to steal away Taylor’s award for Favorite Country Artist. I mean really, Taylor must be really over these jokes by now (I know I am), but she wonderfully responded with, “This always happens, gah…” When Maroon 5 won the next award for Favorite Band, Adam Levine just kept wishing he was as charming as Taylor. Shemar Moore introduced Alicia Keys’s performance of “Girl on Fire;” but more importantly he told the story of when he asked her out on a date 10 years ago when they met at Soul Train. She responded (and dare I say, inspired a nation?) with, “Look here, son. I appreciate your flirt game, but my man situation is handled.” I think we can all agree that that must be some kind of man situation to turn down Shemar Moore. [jump to 4:31]
Surprising to no one, Ellen DeGeneres won Favorite Daytime TV Host (cue Kate McKinnon: “Hi, I’m Ellen!”) and said the second greatest line of the night, “I’d like to thank everyone on my team, Melissa Etheridge, Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes…”
Jennifer Lawrence is ever upping her quirk factor (thank goodness) and easily won for most adorably awkward acceptance speech when she won Favorite Movie Actress.
This show was Robert Downey Jr.’s most recent pit stop in a quest to make himself absolutely indistinguishable from Tony Stark as he accepted his award for Favorite Movie Actor and Favorite Superhero. Seriously, there’s no difference.
Thankfully a high percentage of the winners during this night are on my Favorite People Ever list, of which Emma Watson is pretty near the top. Not only did she win Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress, but her delightful My Week with Marilyn costar Eddie Redmayne presented the award with some lovely kind words that I 100% agree with.
